NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi is set to visit Bihar on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, to inaugurate the new Nalanda University campus near Rajgir’s ancient ruins. The new campus, named after the historic university that attracted global scholars 1600 years ago, is a significant step towards revitalizing this esteemed institution.
Officials have confirmed that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and ambassadors from 17 partner countries will also grace the occasion, highlighting the international importance of this event.
Professor Abhay Kumar Singh, the university’s interim vice-chancellor, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “PM Modi’s visit is a prestigious and auspicious occasion. His presence, alongside diplomats from East Asia Summit countries and External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, makes this event truly special.”

During his visit, Modi will tour the ancient Nalanda site, now a UNESCO heritage site since 2016, at around 9:45 AM. He is scheduled to inaugurate the campuses at approximately 10:30 AM and deliver a speech, as per the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Abhay Kumar Singh noted that PM Modi’s visit would enhance Nalanda University’s global recognition, given its diverse student body representing 26 countries. Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arelkar and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will also join the inauguration alongside PM Modi.
The university’s transition to its new campus in 2020 blends traditional and modern architecture across its expansive 455-acre area, featuring a Net Zero zone with 100 acres of water bodies.
In 2007, following a suggestion from then-President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the Bihar assembly laid the foundation for the new Nalanda University, encompassing 455 acres. Established on Nov 25, 2010, through a special Act of Parliament, it gained national institution status.

The new Nalanda University commenced operations on Sep 1, 2014, at a temporary location with 14 students. The permanent campus, initiated by former President Pranab Mukherjee in 2016, boasts two academic buildings, two auditoriums, a hostel for 550 students, a theatre, a sports complex, and an international centre.
According to media sources, this esteemed institution offers postgraduate and doctoral research programs, short-term certificates, and scholarships for international students, further solidifying its global presence and academic excellence.
