NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) in Delhi on Saturday, Aug 3. The prestigious event, which brings together experts and policymakers from around the world, is centred on addressing critical issues in agricultural economics and promoting sustainable development.
With approximately one thousand delegates from 75 countries in attendance, this year’s conference is themed ‘Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems’. The focus is on finding solutions for sustainable agriculture amidst global challenges such as climate change, resource degradation, rising production costs, and ongoing conflicts.

In his inaugural address, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the conference in India after a 65-year hiatus. He extended a warm welcome to the international delegates, stating, “You all are here from different countries of the world. I welcome you on behalf of 120 million farmers of India, more than 30 million women farmers, and 30 million fishermen of the country. Today, you are in a country where 550 million animals live. You all are welcome in this agriculture-dominated and animal-loving country.”
Union Minister for Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, also addressed the conference, highlighting India’s achievements in the sector under PM Modi’s leadership. “India’s growth rate in the agricultural sector has been among the highest in the world. While increasing production is vital, India has always prioritized safe production for human health and the well-being of the Earth and soil. We are emphasizing organic farming,” Chouhan noted.
Prime Minister Modi underscored India’s strong system of agricultural research and education. He revealed that the country boasts more than 500 agricultural colleges and over 700 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Farm Science Centres) that provide farmers with the latest technological information. Additionally, Modi reported that in the past decade, ninety lakh hectares of land have been brought under micro-irrigation.
The conference will continue to delve into strategies and initiatives designed to advance sustainable agricultural practices and reinforce global food security till Aug 7.
