PM Modi departs for Russia to attend BRICS Summit

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Russia today to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, taking place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. Ahead of his departure, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for “extensive discussions” on critical global issues during the summit, which is chaired by Russia this year.

 

The BRICS Summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is set to address a wide array of topics ranging from digital inclusion and climate change to economic cooperation. Modi’s agenda includes one-on-one meetings with his counterparts from other BRICS nations, as well as with invited leaders, to foster deeper bilateral ties.

In a statement, PM Modi highlighted India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening collaboration within the BRICS framework, calling it a “vital platform for dialogue.” He underscored the significance of last year’s expansion of the group, which added new members, enhancing its mission for global development and inclusivity. “I’m excited for in-depth conversations on a variety of topics,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing pressing global challenges.

 

In a recent interview, Vinay Kumar, a senior official accompanying the Prime Minister, elaborated on the key agenda items expected to be discussed. He highlighted the need for bolstering economic cooperation, advocating for trade settlements in national currencies, and tackling climate change through initiatives like PM Modi’s Life for Environment (LiFE) mission. Kumar also pointed out the importance of promoting digital and financial inclusion for underserved communities, reinforcing BRICS’ commitment to equitable growth.
