NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday said that the central investigative agencies are under pressure from the BJP government to harass the opposition party leadership. Congress also accused the ruling party of using the central agencies to muffle the dissenting voices.
Speaking to media at the party headquarters here, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said, “This whole action (ED questioning of Rahul Gandhi) is an attempt by BJP to state that those who attempt to speak against the party, would not be allowed by any means.”
Taking a dig at the central government over the National Herald case, which the Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered nine months ago, Pilot said, “The case is opened after seven years. There is no case, there is no FIR. This is a deliberate effort, by dominating the agencies, to prove the fact that those who decide to speak up, shall have a similar fate.”
The former Rajasthan deputy chief minister said, “The questioning (of Rahul Gandhi) continued till 12 in the night, which has never happened ever before. The agencies are under political pressure of the government to harass the Congress leadership, be it Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi.”
“This is a crucial situation for the nation. This is an attempt to target and crush those who think against the ideologies of the party in power,” he said.
The pilot said that the governments keep changing, but these agencies and these institutions shouldn’t be pressurised. “This is not in the spirit of democracy. We not only protest for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, but also for how these agencies are being misused.”
He said that in the past seven-eight years, no one would have heard of any similar incident happening with any BJP leaders. “This is purely politically motivated. The only reason for this is Rahul Gandhi’s opposition against the Prime Minister inside as well as outside the Parliament. This is clearly visible,” he said.
Pointing out the police action against the party leaders at the Congress headquarters, Pilot said, “Look at the actions by the police, they enter the party headquarters, do a lathicharge, detain party leaders, engage in violence. This behaviour with our senior MLAs and MPs only shows the sad state of this government.”
