JAMMU: Stressing that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be eradicated without active public cooperation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to assisting the Union Home Ministry in maintaining stability in the region.

“Although security matters are not directly under our jurisdiction, I have consistently maintained that eliminating terrorism is impossible without the people’s support. The elected government is making every effort and extending its cooperation to the Lieutenant Governor to ensure law and order is upheld,” Abdullah told reporters outside the legislative assembly before the day’s proceedings commenced.

The Chief Minister was addressing queries regarding the anti-terrorist operation underway in Sanyal, near the International Border in the Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.

“Such incidents have occurred in the past, and as per the latest updates, no direct contact has been made with the terrorists yet. The search operation, initiated based on suspicious movement, is ongoing, and we must wait to assess the outcome,” he stated.

He further noted that since the operation is taking place in a border village, there is a strong possibility that the infiltrators entered from across the border.

“At this stage, making any definitive statement would be premature. We need to observe how the situation unfolds,” he added.

Responding to concerns about the repeated targeting of Kathua and Billawar by terrorists, Abdullah pointed out that several parts of Jammu have witnessed a surge in terror-related activities in recent years.

“We have seen similar patterns of unrest in Rajouri, Poonch, and other districts. Their aim is to disrupt peace in the region,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s determination to counter such threats and urged the public to remain vigilant and support security forces in their efforts to maintain stability.
