JAMMU : People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra on Monday called on the government to reinstate July 13 and December 5 as official holidays, underscoring their historical importance in Jammu and Kashmir’s democratic evolution.
Addressing the media in Jammu, Parra stressed the need to honor those who laid down their lives in defense of democracy. “After years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an elected government with a high voter turnout. While discussing financial plans and policy direction, it is equally vital to acknowledge those who made the ultimate sacrifice for democracy—be it Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah or the martyrs of July 13, who fought against autocratic rule,” he stated.
His appeal comes at a time when debates over Jammu and Kashmir’s political legacy and the recognition of key historical milestones continue to stir controversy.
“We must move beyond party lines and collectively endorse a resolution to officially recognize these two pivotal days as public holidays,” he urged.
When asked about opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Parra accused the party of viewing the issue through a religious and regional perspective. “BJP sees this matter through the lens of religion, Muslims, and Kashmir. However, this is not about any particular faith or region. It is about celebrating democracy, a principle that has been upheld for over 70 years,” he asserted.
Backing Parra’s stance, PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti praised his speech in a post on X, stating, “Congratulations @parawahid for eloquently expressing the pain and anguish of the people of J&K—peaceful yet peace less.”
