“My mother and I have been confined to our home. The entrance to our residence has been secured because she was scheduled to visit Sopore, where Waseem Mir lost his life in army gunfire,” Iltija Mufti wrote on X.
“I had planned to visit Kathua to meet the family of Makhan Din, but I am not even being permitted to step outside. Despite elections, nothing has changed in Kashmir. Now, even extending condolences to bereaved families is being treated as a crime,” she remarked.
On the night between February 5 and 6, a truck driver from Sopore was fatally shot on Thursday after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
According to law enforcement sources, the event transpired when a truck transporting apple crates was signaled to halt at a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) established by security personnel. The vehicle, however, failed to adhere to the directive and instead sped through the checkpoint, prompting security forces to engage.
The driver sustained severe injuries during the altercation and subsequently succumbed. Authorities have confirmed that a post-mortem examination is underway, while investigations continue to uncover the driver’s background and any potential motives behind his actions.
In a separate incident on Feb 6, In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti alleged that 25-year-old Makhan Din from Perody, Billawar, was wrongfully detained by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Billawar on unverified charges of being an Over Ground Worker (OGW). She claimed that he was severely beaten, forced into a confession, and was later found dead.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have dismissed claims by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, asserting that a resident of Billawar, Kathua, died by suicide and was not subjected to custodial torture, as alleged on social media. Meanwhile, the government has also initiated a magisterial probe into the incident.
