NEW DELHI: An Air India passenger claims that he found a metal blade in the food provided on the flight from Bengaluru to San Francisco on June 9. Reacting to the incident, the Tata Group-owned airline confirmed the presence of the metal blade in the meal.

Mathures Paul, a journalist by profession, took to social media to share his ordeal aboard Air India AI 175 flight. He wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), ‘I had a trip from Bangalore to San Francisco (AI 175) on June 9th. In the bowl of fig chaat they served, there was a blade. I realized it was in my food after chewing it for two or three seconds. As soon as I spat it out, I recognized what the object was.’

The passenger also raised questions and concerns: ‘It is dangerous to have a blade on any flight. Secondly, it could have cut through my tongue. Thirdly, what if a child had been eating this food?’ A few days later, they emailed me to say I could take a business class trip anywhere in the next year. ‘That is a bribe, and I don’t accept it.’

Clarifying the controversy over the presence of a metal blade in the meal, Air India’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, Rajesh Dogra, said that the foreign object came from a vegetable processing machine used to cut raw vegetables. To prevent similar situations in the future, the company has increased the frequency of examinations of processors, especially after chopping any hard vegetables.

The passenger posted two images: one when it was served and the second when he spat out the blade after unknowingly chewing it for a few seconds. He wrote in another post on X, ‘Air India food can cut like a knife. Thankfully, no harm was done. What if the metal piece had been in the food served to a child?’
