OYO goes Sanskari by enforcing a new policy requiring unmarried couples to provide proof of relationship for check-ins in Meerut.
NEW DELHI: OYO has introduced a new check-in policy for 2025, starting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, which prohibits unmarried couples from checking into partner hotels without providing valid proof of their relationship. The policy, aimed at ensuring a safer and more responsible hospitality experience, requires couples to present evidence of their relationship at the time of check-in, effectively limiting bookings to married or officially recognized couples.
This move comes in response to feedback from local civil society groups in Meerut, as well as other cities, who had raised concerns over societal norms. The new policy reflects the cultural expectations of these regions, where the presence of unmarried couples in hotels has sometimes sparked controversy. To address this, OYO’s partner hotels will have the discretion to decline bookings based on local social norms and their individual policies.

The company’s decision to implement this policy is a direct response to requests from these community groups, who emphasized the importance of respecting local values while maintaining a safe and responsible approach to hospitality. As part of its broader initiative, OYO is taking steps to ensure the policy is enforced effectively, including working closely with law enforcement and hotel partners. The company is also conducting seminars to raise awareness about these new standards.
Pawas Sharma, Region Head of OYO North India, emphasized the company’s commitment to upholding safe hospitality practices, stating, “OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognize our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in.” Sharma further assured that the policy will be periodically reviewed for its impact and effectiveness, ensuring it aligns with OYO’s broader vision for a safe and inclusive environment.
OYO’s initiative is part of a larger program aimed at transforming its public image and positioning itself as a brand that prioritizes safety and comfort for a diverse range of travelers, including families, students, business travelers, and solo visitors. While this policy begins in Meerut, OYO plans to assess its implementation and may extend it to other regions depending on local needs and community feedback.
Through these efforts, OYO aims to promote a more secure and responsible hospitality environment, aligning with the growing demand for hotels that cater to the values and preferences of diverse customer bases across India.
