Srinagar police rubbished rumour fuelled by politician Asaduddin Owaisi that Jamia Masjid Srinagar is closed on Fridays. The police clarified that the mosque is fully open.

“Only on three occasions after it opened post-Covid was the masjid temporarily shut for Friday noon prayers, owing to warning (intel inputs) about terror attack and due to law and order situation,” the police tweeted.

Police said that Jamia Masjid was then shut only after Jamia Intezamia authorities failed to give assurance and take the onus of happenings inside the mosque.

“Non-Kashmir-based persons who are far away from reality should behave responsibly and resist making false statements and fan sensationalism,” the police added.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday questioned why Jamia Masjid in Srinagar was shut every Friday when Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated multipurpose cinema halls in South Kashmir’s twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama on Sunday. He appealed to the LG not to shut the Jamia Masjid during the afternoon matinee show.

Taking to Twitter, Owaisi said: “Sir @manojsinha_ you have opened Cinema Halls in Shopian & Pulwama but why is Srinagar Jamia Masjid shut every Friday at least don’t shut it during the afternoon matinee show.”

On Tuesday, LG Manoj Sinha also inaugurated Kashmir’s first multiplex cinema in Srinagar. He stated that each district in the Union Territory will have 100-seater cinema halls soon.

He said Srinagar was a hub of entertainment once as the district had eight big cinema halls – Palladium, Regal, Sheeraz, Neelam, Khayam, Broadway, Naaz, and Firdous. “Today, we are trying to bring back the lost era again. Today, the opening of the cinema reflects the changing picture of J&K,” he said.  About the new film policy, the J&K LG said that a lot of movies have been shot in Kashmir recently and more are in the pipeline.
