GUWAHATI: Over 300 former student union workers led by Dibyajyoti Medhi, former central committee member of the All Assam Student Union (AASU) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.
Medhi said, “Due to the work done by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The youth also agrees to that and as such, we have decided to participate in the BJP wave. More will come from the AASU in the coming days as many are contemplating joining.”
Prior to the induction programme, a mega bike rally led by Medhi had begun from Khanapara to Vajpayee Bhawan, where the workers joined with the BJP. The former central committee member told the media, “As per sources, the decision was taken by former AASU leaders and workers after the recent (student union) session.”
Earlier, the AASU delegation alongside Medhi had also met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma where they had expressed support to the saffron party.

Alongside the student union delegation, former Congress MP Kirip Chaliha’s son Arkashish Chaliha also joined hands with the BJP at the event.
The state BJP President Bhabesh Kalita stated that the only reason why the student union leaders were joining hands with the saffron party is because of the respect that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has meted to the youth. He added that the youth also respects Modi’s leadership, however, the Congress had betrayed Assam because of the amount of corruption they had brought with them.
“Today more than 200 people, even the son of former MP Kirip Chaliha joined the BJP. The ideology of PM Modi has attracted them. In the upcoming Lok Sabha, this will create momentum for the BJP,” said Bhabesh Kalita.
Senior BJP leader and Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika was also a part of the programme. “Today youths have left the AASU to join the BJP. I congratulate everyone and we will work together. There is even a bigger list of people to join the BJP, we will soon accommodate them,” Hazarika said.
As per sources within the BJP, a series of high-profile personalities are slated to join the party in Assam, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
