NEW DELHI – OpenAI announced on Monday, Dec 9, the release of its text-to-video AI model, Sora Turbo, to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. The move marks the Microsoft-backed company’s latest advancement in multimodal AI technologies.
Sora Turbo enables users to generate videos of up to 20 seconds in 1080p resolution, available in widescreen, vertical, or square formats. The new tool aims to empower creators while maintaining stringent safeguards against misuse.

The AI powerhouse, known for sparking the generative AI revolution with ChatGPT in November 2022, is targeting competitors like Meta, Google, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion.

“We’re working on tailored pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year,” OpenAI shared in a blog post.
“Uploads of people will be limited at launch, but we intend to roll the feature out to more users as we refine our deepfake mitigations,” the company noted, highlighting concerns around harmful content like sexual deepfakes and child sexual abuse materials.
OpenAI reassured users that safeguards are in place to prevent the creation and distribution of damaging or abusive content. Despite these measures, Sora Turbo won’t initially be available in EU countries, Switzerland, or the UK due to regulatory challenges, but users in other regions with ChatGPT access can utilize the tool.
The introduction of Sora Turbo underscores OpenAI’s ambition to remain at the forefront of generative AI innovation while fostering responsible use.
