The incident occurred after a car rammed into a scooter and dragged a rider on its roof for around 350 metres in Delhi
A 41-year-old scooter rider lost his life while the pillion rider got injured in yet another case of hit and drag in Delhi. The incident was reported from the Keshavpuram area of northwest Delhi in the wee hours of January 27.
According to the police, the car managed to drag the victim for 350 meters before being intercepted by a PCR van. All five occupants of the car, who were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, have been arrested by Delhi Police.
Earlier this month, a 20-year-old woman died after being dragged for 13 kilometres under the wheels of a car in the Sultanpuri area. The four occupants, who were present in the car, were returning after the New Year’s Party. They too were driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to DCP (Northwest) Usha Rangnani, the incident took place at 3 am in Keshavpuram when two PCR vans (MPVs) were on night patrol near Prerna Chowk.
One of the PCR vans noticed a car, a Tata Zest XM bearing registration number DL11 CA 7752, hit a scooty, a Honda Activa bearing registration number DL5S CT 0768, at Prerna Chowk in Kanhaiya Nagar.
The collision was such that one of the scooty riders was tossed in the air and fell on the roof of the car. He later fell on the road. Meanwhile, another person got stuck between the windshield and the bonnet of the car.
The driver of the offending vehicle, instead of stopping his car, accelerated it towards Inderlok in an attempt to flee the spot. “PCR van staff acted promptly and displayed a keen sense of alertness and a swift response while intercepting the offending vehicle at a distance of about 350 meters from the spot,” Rangnani said.
The driver of the offending vehicle and the other four occupants tried to escape from the spot, but head constable Surjeet Singh and constable Ram Kishore, who were deployed in the van, chased them and caught two of the occupants – Parveen alias Silli (20), who was driving the vehicle, and Diviansh Puri (21), who is one of the occupants.
Meanwhile, the staff deployed at another PCR van were informed about the accident. “They coordinated well and displayed exemplary devotion to duty by shifting both injured patients to the hospital immediately,” Rangnani added.
Both victims were identified as Kailash Bhatnagar, (41) and Sumit Khari (35). They worked in a jeans factory. Police said Bhatnagar succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the hospital. Khari is under treatment in the hospital.
Meanwhile, during the investigation, three more accused persons – Om Bhardwaj (19), Harsh Mudgal (19) and Devansh (19) – were also apprehended.
Police said that on interrogation, it was revealed that all accused persons are students and that they were roaming around after attending a wedding function. During their medical examination, it was observed that all the accused were under the influence of alcohol.
The police said in order to motivate the vigilant staff of PCR vans for their well-coordinated and instant response, they will be felicitated and rewarded.
