Omar Abdullah suggests renaming the Navyug Tunnel as the “Dr. Manmohan Singh Tunnel” to honor the late Prime Minister’s.
SRINAGAR: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday suggested renaming the Navyug Tunnel, which links Qazigund and Banihal on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, as the “Dr Manmohan Singh Tunnel” to honour the late Prime Minister’s contributions to Jammu and Kashmir.
Highlighting Dr Singh’s legacy, Omar stated, “The four-laning of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway began during his tenure. Today, the journey between Srinagar and Jammu takes just five hours—this transformation is thanks to his vision.”
Omar described Singh as a statesman whose impact on the region would be remembered for generations. “From convening the Round Table Conference on Kashmir to launching cross-LoC trade, appointing interlocutors, and initiating special scholarships for J&K students, his efforts were unmatched. He also prioritized the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits,” he added.

The CM emphasized that while others may claim credit for recent infrastructure projects, the foundation for these developments was laid by Dr Singh. “He was a quiet achiever who never highlighted his accomplishments, but his work speaks for itself. Renaming the tunnel would be a fitting tribute to a true son of the soil,” Omar remarked.
The Navyug Tunnel, a critical part of the Srinagar-Jammu highway, has significantly improved connectivity in the region, underscoring the late leader’s transformative impact on J&K’s infrastructure and development.
