Omar Abdullah poised to become J&K’s first CM post-UT status

SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah is set to become the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its reorganization into a Union Territory. Abdullah, who contested from both Budgam and Ganderbal, secured significant victories in both constituencies, defeating his closest rivals by large margins.

 

In Ganderbal, a traditional NC stronghold, Abdullah triumphed over PDP’s Bashir Ahmad Mir, securing 32,727 votes, winning by 10,574 votes. He also won the Budgam seat by a comfortable margin of 18,485 votes, with 36,010 votes against PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, who managed 17,525 votes.

 

 

Other prominent winners include senior NC leaders Abdul Rahim Rather, Ali Mohammad Sagar, and Mubarak Gul. Congress leaders Tariq Hamid Karra and Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, along with CPI (M) leader MY Tarigami, also secured victories.

 

However, key Apni Party figures, including Altaf Bukhari, Ghulam Hassan Mir, and Imran Reza Ansari, faced significant defeats. PDP also suffered losses, with senior leaders like Syed Basharat Bukhari, Abdul Rehman Veeri, and Iltija Mufti, daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, losing their respective seats.

 

 

Mubarak Gul secured his sixth term in the Assembly by winning the Eidgah constituency in Srinagar, while CPI (M)’s Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami continued his winning streak in Kulgam, securing his fifth consecutive term.

 

The election results highlighted the return of many seasoned politicians, with NC gaining the upper hand across several constituencies. Candidates like Javaid Ahmad Mirchal (Karnah), Saifullah Mir (Trehgam), Qaysar Jamshaid Lone (Lolab), and Irshad Rasool Kar (Uri) contributed to NC’s success, defeating rivals by significant margins.

 

 

The Indian National Congress won five seats, including Kreeri, Bandipora, Shalteng, Dooru, and Anantnag, with leaders like Tariq Hamid Karra and Gulam Ahmad Mir leading the way.

 

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure three seats in Kupwara, Tral, and Pulwama, while Sajad Lone of the People’s Conference (PC) retained his Handwara seat. Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami from CPI (M) won in Kulgam, maintaining his influence in the region.

 

Two Independent candidates also made their mark, with Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh securing Langate and Shabir Ahmad Kulley winning in Shopian after being denied an NC ticket.
