NEW DELHI: The 2024 DUSU elections witnessed a historic comeback for the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), with Rounak Khatri securing the position of President and Lokesh Choudhary emerging as the Joint Secretary. Advocates Aashu Batode, Vikas Kadyan, and Swapnam Singh, who represented the winning candidates in the Delhi High Court, expressed pride in the success of their clients.
Advocate Aashu Batode in a conversation with The New Indian stated, “It’s a proud moment for a democratic university. Both candidates whom we represented have won with significant margins. This victory reflects the spirit of democracy among students.”

The results come after a prolonged legal battle, as the High Court had earlier stayed the elections, adding to the tension surrounding the polls.
Advocate Vikas Kadyan highlighted the significance of NSUI’s return to power after seven years, stating, “This victory is crucial for democracy, ensuring fairness and giving different parties the opportunity to lead. After a long gap, NSUI has revived its influence.”
Batode pointed out that NSUI’s previous organizational weaknesses and ABVP’s failure to meet student expectations contributed to the shift. “NSUI’s comeback took seven years due to its earlier disorganized structure, but students now see ABVP’s inability to deliver as a turning point,” he said.

Kadyan attributed ABVP’s past dominance to its alignment with the BJP-led central government, adding, “Student politics often mirrors national politics. With the BJP at the center, ABVP had an edge over the years.”
Batode noted that while Congress remains weak in Delhi, this victory could influence the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections in February. However, he cautioned that its impact remains uncertain.
The election results mark a significant shift in student politics at Delhi University, signaling the reemergence of NSUI as a formidable force.
