"We received a lot of complaints on Twitter about the video. Dressing up is a personal choice. We are not here to set standards for society," the official said.

Recently, a video of a woman wearing a bra and miniskirt while riding the Delhi metro went viral and sparked a debate online about her clothing choices with some comparing her with fashion influencer Uorfi Javed.

A video of her, apparently taken by another passenger, went viral on social media, inviting criticism from many quarters of society for causing inconvenience and unease to fellow commuters.

Senior officials at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), however, don’t look at the incidents from the prism of morality and societal standards.

A senior DMRC official on Tuesday told The New Indian that the public transporter has no problem with any commuter’s clothing choices but appealed to passengers to keep in mind the comfort of others.

“We received a lot of complaints on Twitter about the video. Dressing up is a personal choice. We are not here to set standards for society,” the official said.

He said that the DMRC recently issued a statement to raise “awareness and caution passengers about comfort of other passengers on the Delhi metro”.

“Any indecent behaviour is punishable under section 59 of The Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002. Punishment is decided based on the act and cannot be decided beforehand,” the official added.

In its statement, the DMRC, a 50-50 partnership franchise of the Central and Delhi governments, urged its customers to “behave appropriately and not offend others”.

It also clarified that clothing choices are a personal matter that passengers should regulate responsibly.

“DMRC expects its commuters to follow all social etiquette and protocols which are acceptable in the society. Commuters should not indulge in any activity or wear any attire which could offend the sensibilities of other fellow passengers. DMRC’s Operations & Maintenance Act in fact lists out indecency as a punishable offense under Section 59,” reads the statement.

“We appeal to all our passengers to kindly maintain decorum while traveling in a public transport system like the Metro. However, issues such as the choice of clothing while traveling is a personal issue and passengers are expected to self-regulate their conduct in a responsible manner.”
