Shunning any special treatment, PM Modi’s younger brother Pankaj Modi immersed the ashes of their mother Heeraba in Ganga  Simplicity has been the hallmark of Heeraba, the late mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And on her final journey, her son ensures it remains like that, as Heeraba’s ashes were immersed in the Ganga river at Haridwar, shunning any VIP arrangement.

PM Modi’s younger brother Pankaj Modi performed the last rites at Haridwar. Heeraba’s ashes were immersed in the Haridwar ghat with all Vedic rituals.

The whole ritual was performed without any administrative arrangements. So much so that no information was shared even with the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit and Pankaj Modi returned to Gandhinagar after performing the rites.

PM Modi’s mother, Heeraba, took her last breath on December 30 at the age of 100 in Gandhinagar.

The last rites of Heeraba had also been performed in Ahmedabad without any VIP arrangements. Followers of Modi, the BJP cadres, including senior functionaries, were directed to go ahead with their scheduled engagements.

No special arrangements were made, and no traffic restrictions were imposed, as PM Modi walked barefoot to the crematorium, carrying the body on his shoulders.

While the powerful frequently use their connections to obtain preferential treatment, PM Modi’s refusal to accept VIP treatment also served as a message to those prominent and privileged families.

PM Modi’s family has also stated that no memorial or land will be dedicated in Heeraba’s honor, as has been done in the cases of other people.

PM Modi had written an emotional blog about his mother when she entered the hundredth year of her life on June 28 last year. He described his mother “as extraordinary yet simple”.

“Mother – is not just any other word in the dictionary. It encompasses a whole range of emotions – love, patience, trust, and a lot more. Across the world, irrespective of country or region, children have a special affection for their mothers,” he added.

“A mother not only gives birth to her children, but also shapes their mind, their personality, and their self-confidence. And while doing so, mothers selflessly sacrifice their own personal needs and aspirations,” PM Modi wrote.
