With the call for the separation of North Bengal gaining momentum in West Bengal, the state legislative assembly passes a motion against any attempt to demand a separate statehood for North Bengal.

Minister of State for Education Satyajit Barman brought the motion under Rule 185. While presenting the matter, Barman stated that there are certain forces (political opponents) that are trying to divide the state and ‘harm the culture and heritage’ of the state.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Firhad Hakim added, “We will die but will never allow the division.”

Speaking to The New Indian on the issue, Jawhar Sarkar pointed his finger at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said, “They are coming up with several things for their divide and rule policy. They try this on any state government that is opposed to the central government.”

The BJP, which neither opposed nor supported the motion, termed it a ‘political stunt before the rural poll’.

BJP MP from Bengal Saumitra Khan said, “The State Legislative Assembly, the temple of democracy from where the laws of the state are passed, has been taken down forcefully from its esteemed position by this government of West Bengal.”

“She does not understand the law. This is unfortunate because even if the Speaker endeavours to do good things, it’s not known whether he can or not because of the ruling party. The most dignified state legislative assembly has become a laughing stock. Here the voice of the opposition has been suppressed,” Khan further stated.

In the 2019 general election, the BJP won seven out of eight seats in the entire eight districts of North Bengal. The BJP won 30 of the 54 seats in the 2021 state assembly elections.

Party leaders pitched their demand for separate statehood, citing that the state government has deprived the people of North Bengal of their basic rights.

Alipurduar MP John Barla, on several occasions, raised his voice demanding North Bengal be made a separate state.

Things looked complicated in North Bengal itself, as the Bharatiya Gorkhaland Sangharsh Samiti (BGSS) had been demanding a separate Gorkhaland.
