Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday dubbed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a brand of justice and trust. He also said that there is no lack of political will in the government to take action against the corrupt.

Inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations of the CBI in New Delhi, PM Modi also stressed that the delay in the probe does not help in getting justice for the innocent.

He said that delay benefits the accused and the agency needs to make the process fast, matching international standards.

“We need to learn from the past. For years, corruption cases have been pending. A delay in the probe does not help get justice for the innocent and only benefits the accused. We need to make the process fast and match it with international standards,” PM Modi said in his address.

“There is no lack of political will with the government in taking action,” PM Modi added.

Taking a potshot at previous governments, PM Modi said, “We have a legacy of corruption. Even after several decades of independence, a few people kept on promoting corruption.”

“Ten years ago, the government’s projects and decisions were under the scanner. Today in our country, we discussed the trillion-dollar economy and at that time, we only heard about scams. As they knew that the system was standing with them. Across the country, anger towards the system and the government grew, resulting in policy paralysis and a halt in the country’s development,” he added.

PM Modi also inaugurated the newly constructed office complexes of the CBI in Shillong, Pune, and Nagpur and launched the postal tickets, coin and the CBI’s Twitter handle.

“As a premium investigation, CBI covered 60 years and its six decades have been filled with many accolades. The CBI is also a sangrah of SC judgements,” PM Modi said during his address on Monday, March 4.

Highlighting the role of the agency, which was founded in 1963, PM Modi said that CBI, through its work and skills, has earned people’s trust.

“When people think some investigation is impossible, then they demand a CBI probe. CBI is a brand of justice and trust. It has earned respect, which is not an easy task or achievement,” he said.

“Whoever has contributed in the last 60 years to CBI needs to be congratulated,” he said.

With the achievements of the past, we also need to focus on the challenges of the future. The CBI’s ‘Chintan Shivir’ must focus on upgrading and updating and also learning from the past to find new ways,” he noted.

“Building a developed India is not possible without professional and efficient institutions; the CBI, therefore, has a huge responsibility,” PM Modi said.

CBI has made a name for itself in the last six decades, from bank fraud to wildlife, organised crime to cybercrime. The CBI is probing many cases.

He further said that corruption in government departments hurts the dreams of youths as their aspirations are killed.

“We focused on bringing faith to agencies. Thus, we started action in mission mode on black money. Now all government tender processes are transparent. When we talk about 5G today, the difference is visible. Now all government departments are buying through GEM mode,” he said.

Slamming the previous government over bad loans, he said, “Before 2014, we had heard about phone calls. Banks used to give loans over phone calls. But we brought the banking sector out of distress. A few people robbed ₹22,000 crores of banks and we made the fugitive economic offenders act. Now we have attached ₹20,000 crore properties of such people.”

PM Modi also said that the people had made schemes to loot people for decades. They used to target government schemes. A PM had said then that ₹1 is sent from the centre and only 15 paise is received by the beneficiary. Now, through DBT, people are getting their benefits.

Over 2.25 crore false beneficiaries have been removed through DBT, he added.

Targeting the opposition parties, who have been crying about the witch hunt against them by the central agencies, Modi said, “We know the action being taken against people who are very powerful and have been in the government and system for long.”

“Even today, they are in power in some states. They would launch an attack on the agency. They will try to divert your attention. No corruption should be spared. This is the demand of the people of the country. The country is with you, the law is with you and the Constitution is with you,” PM Modi said.

An investiture ceremony for recipients of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Gold Medal for Best Investigating Officers of CBI was also held today, April 3.
