Janata Dal (United) leader Gulam Rasool Balyawi issued an open threat, saying Muslims will turn cities into Karbala if any remark is made against Prophet Muhammad.

“We’re in Karbala ground,” the JD(U) MLC said, without naming anyone. “If you disrespect our Prophet, we will turn cities into Karbala. I don’t want to name any party. Not a single so-called secular leader demanded the arrest of this crazy woman,” he added.

Apparently, Balyawi was referring to now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who faced backlash from the minority community for allegedly making controversial statements about Prophet Muhammad.

MLC Ghulam Rasool made similar statements while addressing a public meeting in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh on Wednesday. He said, “Muslims will make every city Karbala if anyone raises a finger towards Prophet Muhammad.”

During his speech, Balyawi recalled Sharma’s remarks and stated that Muslims will not tolerate any insult to their prophet. He also slammed so-called ‘secular’ political parties for not demanding the arrest of Sharma.

Reportedly, the JDU leader made provocative statements inciting his supporters to block the roads of Ranchi. He also urged the Muslim community to show their might to the government, adding that Muslims are ready to die for Prophet Muhammad. He raised the demand to enact a ‘Muslim Safety Act’, a law based on similar lines to protect the interests of Dalits.

The Battle of Karbala was fought between the army of the second Umayyad Caliph Yazid I and a small army led by Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Though the battle was one-sided and ended with a decisive Umayyad victory, the fallen soldiers of the Husaynid faction have ever since been hailed as martyrs of Islam.
