NEW DELHI: The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) marked its 35th Foundation Day with a grand ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan on November 23. The event was graced by Padma Shri Professor Chamu Krishna Shastry, Chairman of Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, as the Chief Guest. The celebrations commence with the recitation of Vedic mantras and Saraswati Vandana by students from Shrimad Dayanand Kanya Gurukul Mahavidyalaya, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and Divyang students from Amar Jyoti School, a NIOS study centre, welcomed guests with a heartfelt song, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Professor Pankaj Arora, NIOS Chairperson delivered the welcome address and highlighted NIOS’s contributions to modern education. He emphasized NIOS’s role in preserving and promoting Indian knowledge traditions, integrating indigenous knowledge into its curriculum, and providing accessible education in remote areas.

Padma Shri Prof. Chamu Krishna Shastry inaugurated the ‘ULLAS se NIOS’ program, aiming to educate and certify illiterate individuals aged 15 and above, with a target of reaching 5 crore learners by 2027. NIOS also launched its new self-study course ‘Natyakala’.
Professor Nirmaljit Singh Kalsi (IAS), Former Chairman of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and Guest of Honour praised the world-class talent of NIOS learners and commended the inclusive education initiatives at NIOS. In his keynote address, he shared inspiring reflections on the experiences of NIOS learners. He also praised the resilience of Divyang learners and emphasized the importance of education for holistic development.
The event featured special guests, including Prof. Prem Narayan Singh, Director of IUCTE, BHU, Varanasi, and Abhilasha Jha Mishra, Member Secretary of NCTE. Former NIOS students shared their success stories, including Tejas N, a swimming champion; Moitri Sarma, a Taekwondo gold medalist; Madhu, a transgender rights advocate; N Niranjana, a ventriloquist artist; Bhakti Sharma, a junior world record holder in air pistol shooting and Uday Shankar Ravi Kumar, a patent holder in AI.
