NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has extended the deadline for Uttar Pradesh to present a comprehensive sewage management plan for the upcoming 2025 Mahakumbh festival. Scheduled from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj, the event necessitates significant efforts to prevent sewage discharge into the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava underscored the need for a detailed sewage treatment plan proportional to the expected influx during the Mahakumbh. The plan must define clear roles for all involved agencies which include contract details and specify timelines for infrastructure projects.

Justice Shrivastava emphasized that the Mahakumbh festival which attracts millions of pilgrims also poses significant environmental challenges. The proposed sewage management plan is critical to safeguarding the Ganga and Yamuna rivers from pollution. The state’s plan must effectively manage the increased waste and ensure proper sewage treatment during the festival.

The NGT’s decision to extend the deadline reflects the complexity of the task at hand and the need for a robust and well-coordinated approach. The tribunal has mandated a thorough review of the plan to ensure it meets all environmental standards and addresses the potential impact on the rivers.
The NGT also highlighted the importance of community involvement in ensuring the success of the sewage management plan. Engaging local stakeholders and raising awareness about the importance of protecting the rivers are crucial steps in this process.
As the 2025 Mahakumbh approaches, the UP government is under pressure to implement effective measures to prevent environmental degradation. The extended deadline provides an opportunity for the state to refine its plan and ensure comprehensive protection of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers during one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
