New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved multiple initiatives to improve public sanitation and convenience under the Swachh Bharat Mission. These decisions, finalized during a recent council meeting at Palika Kendra, reflect the government’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a cleaner, greener India.
NDMC plans to upgrade existing public toilet units (PTUs), community toilet units (CTUs), and roll call centers. These will now be operated and maintained through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal explained, “The maintenance contracts are divided into four groups to ensure access to public toilets every 500 meters across our jurisdiction.”

To further enhance public convenience, two state-of-the-art toilets will be constructed at Khan Market and Sarojini Nagar Market. In addition, six “pink toilets” dedicated to women have already been built at key locations, including Connaught Place and Sarojini Nagar. A new pink toilet near Kalawati Hospital is under construction and expected to be completed by the next fiscal year.
Recognizing the need for inclusivity, NDMC has built toilets for the third gender at 13 locations. Plans are underway to expand these facilities to 79 additional sites. Chahal emphasized that tenders for these projects have already been invited, with work scheduled to begin soon.

Renovation efforts are also focused on NDMC’s Palika Kendra headquarters. The council has approved plans to upgrade sanitation facilities for employees. According to Chahal, “The scheme for upgrading toilets at Palika Kendra is in progress to ensure the best facilities for our workforce.”
Chahal reiterated NDMC’s broader goal of achieving a 7-star ranking in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan. “Our aim is to beautify every public space while implementing the Prime Minister’s vision of a neat, clean, and green Delhi,” he said.
Chahal concluded by urging residents and visitors to contribute actively to maintaining the city’s cleanliness. “The success of the Swachh Bharat Mission depends on collective effort,” he noted.
