Khattar’s resignation on Tuesday highlighted apparent tensions within the BJP-JJP coalition government. He tendered his resignation to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya before the BJP’s legislature party meeting.
NEW DELHI: Nayab Singh Saini was elected as the new leader of the BJP legislature party. He will be the next Haryana CM, following the resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar. The new chief minister will take oath at 5 pm.
Khattar’s resignation on Tuesday highlighted apparent tensions within the BJP-JJP coalition government. He tendered his resignation to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya before the BJP’s legislature party meeting. A central BJP team, including Union Minister Arjun Munda and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, was present there to oversee the transition process in Haryana.

Amid Khattar’s resignation, leaders from the JJP also sought to influence the choice of the next Chief Minister, advocating for Dushyant Chautala to assume the role. In 2019, The BJP, which holds 41 out of 90 seats in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, formed the government in alliance with the JJP, which has 10 seats.
Now even if JJP withdraws its support the BJP could secure the necessary support from independent MLAs, as BJP needs only 4 MLAs to get a majority. There are seven independent MLAs in Haryana. If we talk about Saini’s personal and political life, Nayab Singh Saini is currently a Member of Parliament representing Kurukshetra. He comes from the OBC community and took over as the Haryana BJP state president in October of last year.

Born in the small village of Mizapur Majra in Ambala, Saini’s journey with the BJP began in 1996, starting with smaller roles and gradually moving up the party ranks. He achieved significant milestones in his political career, such as winning as an MLA from the Narayangarh constituency in 2014 and serving as a minister in the Haryana government in 2016.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Saini emerged victorious from the Kurukshetra constituency, defeating his main opponent from the Indian National Congress by a large margin. Saini is considered a close associate of Manohar Lal Khattar, and his selection as the leader of the legislature group is viewed through the lens of electoral and caste considerations.
