NEW DELHI: The BJP on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu for reportedly calling Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan his “elder brother” during a trip to Kartarpur Sahib.

Sidhu made the remarks while interacting with a Pakistani official at the Kartarpur project in Pakistan. Sidhu was accompanied by several Punjab cabinet ministers to pay obeisance in Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara. ALSO READ: Punjab Netas Amarinder, Sidhu Welcome Modi’s Move On Farm Laws

The controversial Congress leader was heard saying Khan was like a “bada bhai” to him and that he loved him a lot.

The BJP seized the opportunity to attack Sidhu, with its spokesperson Sambit Patra saying, “Sidhu’s declaration of love for Imran Khan was a matter of grave concern for crores of Indians.”

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya, who shared the video on Twitter, also lashed out at Congress leadership for favouring ‘Pakistan loving Sidhu over veteran Amarinder Singh’.

Rahul Gandhi’s favourite Navjot Singh Sidhu calls Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan his “bada bhai”. Last time he had hugged Gen Bajwa, Pakistan Army’s Chief, heaped praises….Is it any surprise that the Gandhi siblings chose a Pakistan loving Sidhu over veteran Amarinder Singh?

Sambit Patra also referred to Salman Khurshid’s controversial book and said the Opposition party sees terror groups such as the ISIS and the Boko Haram in Hindutva while it finds a “bhai jaan” in Khan.

Congress which believes in appeasement is under the impression that there is a section in India which will be happy with praise for Pakistan. But there are no such people in India though

Citing Sidhu’s previous visit to the neighbouring country, Patra said: “This is not the lone statement from Sidhu. In the past, he called Imran Khan – ‘Mera yaar, dildaar’. He had hugged Army General Bajwa also.”

Patra said Punjab, which has a border with Pakistan, needs a mature and patriotic leadership. “Sidhu is not right the person for India and Punjab deserves better than him.”

Not just BJP, Sidhu also faced criticism from his own party over his remarks. In a veiled attack, Congress leader Manish Tewari called Imran Khan a puppet of the ISI and questioned how could someone forget the martyrdom of Indian soldiers in Poonch, J&K.

“@ImranKhanPTI may be anybody’s elder brother but for India he is that cat’s paw of  Pak Deep State ISI-Military combine that drones arms & narcotics into Punjab & sends terrorists on a daily basis across LOC in J&K. Have we forgotten martyrdom of our soldiers in Poonch so soon ?,” Tiwari tweeted.

India this week recently opened the Kartarpur Sahib corridor. The movement of pilgrims from India to Pakistan through the corridor began keeping in view improved covid-19 situation.
