Nair Service Society criticises Congress over rejection of Ram temple invitation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress in Kerala is facing scrutiny from the influential Nair Service Society (NSS) after it indirectly criticised the party for declining an invitation to participate in the consecration ceremony of the ‘Ram Mandir’. The NSS, a prominent community in the state, expressed disappointment, stating that political organisations abstaining from the event for political reasons were considered ‘Unholy.’

The NSS President, Sukumaran Nair, conveyed this indirect rebuke in a press release, asserting that any organisation taking such a stance was displaying a ‘selfish’ motive geared solely towards political gains.

“The NSS is issuing this statement not with political intentions or on behalf of any political party. This position is taken solely based on devotion to Lord Ram, as we have been supporting the cause of the Ram temple from the beginning,” the press release read.

The Congress’ decision to skip the consecration ceremony, scheduled for January 22, coincides with the neighbouring state’s Congress-led government deciding to participate in the event.

Congress MP K Muraleedharan defended the party’s position, accusing the BJP of attempting to divide people along religious lines. “We believe it is the best decision to keep away from the consecration ceremony, which is being politicised by the BJP as the General Elections are approaching. We believe in bringing everyone together and not dividing on religious lines,” Muraleedharan told The New Indian.

In contrast, the state BJP leadership criticised the Congress for what they deemed as double standards. Speaking with TNI, Krishna Kumar, actor and BJP leader, asserted, “This shows the double standards of the Congress. While many Congress leaders in states like UP, MP, and Karnataka openly support the view that all leaders, irrespective of political affiliations, should join the ceremony, in Kerala, they are openly trying to appease certain fundamental groups for electoral benefits.”
