BIJNOR: Uttar Pradesh Police arrested two Muslim brothers for desecrating and vandalising three majars in Sherkot area of Bijnor district on Sunday, it said.

Identified as Mohammad Kamal Ahmad and Mohammad Adib, the brothers were wearing saffron turbans when they attacked the majars, the police said.

“The incident is part of a conspiracy to disturb communal harmony by anti-social elements,” said additional director general of UP Police (Law and Order), Prashant Kumar.

The duo targetted Qutub Shah Ki Majar in the morning but it went unnoticed, the police said.

“At around 4:30 pm, the police were informed about the attack on Jalal Shah Ki Majar in Sherkot. Local police rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, it received information that Bhure Shah Ki Majar was also attacked,” Kumar said.

With the help of locals, the police launched a search operation and arrested the accused.

“Rumours were rife that religious texts were also desecrated, which was found to be untrue,” the office informed.

Specialist agencies and intelligence units are questioning the duo, he added.
