NEW DELHI: A video featuring the iconic former Indian Cricket Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni enjoying a hookah has set social media abuzz. The footage, making rounds on various online platforms, showcases Dhoni, donning a sophisticated suit with his trademark long hair, enjoying a hookah session alongside a group of individuals.
The video, surfaced on the occasion of Dhoni’s 42nd birthday, presents a different side of the cricket genius, known for his remarkable on-field finishes and modest off-field lifestyle. While previously lauded for a heartwarming birthday celebration shared with his pets, this new clip has ignited a range of reactions among netizens.
The visual narrative captures Dhoni’s poised demeanour as he indulges in the hookah, inhaling and exhaling the smoke with ease. Although some admirers joined in praising the casual moment with the affectionately known “Mahi,” others engaged in trolling directed at the esteemed ex-captain.
One X (formerly Twitter) user said “We always heard stories of MS Dhoni the hukka addict, now we can see it also!! Very bad impact on youth of the country, he should avoid such things when he knows how influential he is. Atleast learn from Virat Kohli!!.” Another said, “Start of year and blowing his image. He will eventually pay more than that hookah.”
While some X users defended him, one said, “Guys it’s his private life, he can do whatever he wants to.” Another called him a king quirkily while commenting, “Thala is “SMOKING” but “SMO” is silent !!!”
The viral video of Dhoni indulging in hookah also prompted the resurgence of a previous disclosure by his former CSK teammate George Bailey. Bailey, the former Australian star, had previously shared insights into how the wicket-keeper batsman occasionally relishes smoking hookah and sheesha.
Bailey had once revealed, “He likes smoking a bit of the sheesha or the hookah. So, he quite often would set that up in his room, and it was very much open door policy. You would go in and quite often find a lot of younger players there. For India or lot of other cricket teams, it can be hierarchical, but he certainly broke that down.
“You just find yourself in his room late at night chatting inevitably about the game or about different facets of the game or about different people and with different people it’s a great way to break down barriers,”
