SRINAGAR: In his debut speech during the ongoing Budget Session, Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, raised concerns over the recent deaths of civilians in Kathua and Baramulla, asserting that Kashmiri lives cannot be devalued.
Speaking in Lok Sabha, Rashid demanded a neutral investigation into the death of Waseem Ahmed Mir, who was shot by security forces during a checkpoint inspection in Baramulla, and Makhan Din, who allegedly ended his life due to alleged police harassment in Kathua.
The deaths have sparked widespread outrage, with various political factions calling for a comprehensive probe
Rashid urged the House to ensure an independent inquiry into both cases. โOur lives are not expendable. We deserve the right to live with dignity,โ he asserted.
The AIP leader also questioned the conduct of security forces, asking, โIs Waseem Mirโs blood a daily necessity for our forces?โ He urged the government to hold accountable those responsible and ensure justice.
During his speech, Rashid also shed light on the challenges faced by people in remote areas of northern Kashmir, particularly in Karna, Keran, and Machil.
He highlighted the harsh living conditions, stating that residents survive for six months purely on divine mercy. He appealed to the central government to build a tunnel connecting these isolated areas, ensuring all-weather accessibility for the people.
Rashid has been in Tihar Jail since 2019, following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a 2017 terror-funding case. Despite his imprisonment, he secured a Lok Sabha seat from Baramulla in the 2024 general elections.
From January to February 2025, Srinagar Police has registered 26 cases under the NDPS Act, arresting 48 individuals and detaining 5 others under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.
His presence in Parliament has reignited political debates, with many closely watching how his legal and political journey unfolds in the coming months.
