NEW DELHI: Deputy Chief Minister elect, Jagdish Devda, spoke exclusively with The New Indian discounting claims of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s calls for a caste census inspiring them to propel Mohan Yadav as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

“We adhere to the decisions taken by the party leadership and whatever decision is taken, is done with a lot of thought,” Devda told our Executive Editor Rohan Dua.

Upon being asked if he is slated to become the state’s Deputy CM, he said that he would take the opportunity in a jiffy if he is given the option to. “If I get the opportunity then I will work hard and extensively in that position,” he remarked.

Presently, the party leadership has also hinted at him being the first contender in the race to become the Deputy CM in Madhya Pradesh. BJP MLA Rajendra Shukla is also being considered as a possible contender for the said office.

The Deputy CM-probable also highlighted that it was the saffron party that had provided “ordinary party workers” with important portfolios. “The BJP provides ample space even to an ordinary karyakarta and gives us extremely important portfolios, which no other party does. So, when it provides us with the space, we work our way through. I have been working and will still be working,” said Devda.

He further highlighted how such a pattern of an ordinary person gaining important portfolios has been followed in the BJP in the past as well, drawing examples from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This is not the first time such a decision has been taken. Decisions like that have also been taken at the national level as well. You can see this with the Presidential post, even the Prime Ministerial and governor posts as well. It is only possible to get an important portfolio at the BJP for an ordinary party worker,” Devda said.

On the other hand, he also highlighted that he will keep working as he had before becoming a possible Deputy CM candidate. “Pehle bhi kaam karte the, ab bhi kaam karenge (I used to work with the same gusto before, and that I will carry on to the next portfolio that I get),” he said.
