Most Expensive Over In Test History: Bumrah Slams 35 Off Broad

Jasprit Bumrah is playing his first Test as a captain.

England seamer Stuart Broad on Saturday created an unflattering record by conceding 35 runs in an over during the Day 2 of the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston. This is the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket.

Earlier, Robin Peterson, Keshav Maharaj, and England’s James Anderson had given away 28 runs in an over.

This unenviable record took place during the 84th over of the Indian innings. The first ball of the over went for four as Jasprit Bumrah – playing his first Test as a captain – attempted a pull but the top-edge went to the boundary. Broad tried another short delivery but it flew over Bumrah and the wicketkeeper Sam Billings for a boundary. This was called a wide due to height and India got 5 runs as a result.

On the next ball, Broad overstepped and bowled a no-ball. Another bouncer resulted in another top-edge and the ball went sailing over the boundary line for a six. So essentially, India had scored 16 runs off just one legal delivery.

The next legal ball was a full-toss which was tonked by Bumrah for a four. The third ball took an inside edge and went to the fine-leg boundary. Till then, Bumrah and India had plundered 24 runs off three legal balls.

The clearly flustered Broad dug in another short-ball and Bumrah swatted it in front of square and it went to the mid-wicket boundary. The fifth delivery of the over was another short-ball on the leg stump and Bumrah smote it over long-leg for a six.

Broad finally managed to whip out a yorker on the last ball and Bumrah managed just a single. But by then, 35 runs were already scored.

In 2007, during the World T20, Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh had walloped six sixes off Broad and pillaged 36 runs in the over. Bumrah almost came to replicating his former teammate’s feat against the same bowler in a different format.

Eventually, India were bowled out for 416 in their innings with Bumrah remaining unbeaten for 31 off just 16 balls.
