NEW DELHI: In declining Congress’ offer to join the party, Prashant Kishor held out the mirror as he said that more than him, Congress needs leadership and collective will to fix “deep-rooted structural problems”.

“I declined the generous offer of Congress to join the party as part of the EAG (Empowered Action Group) and take responsibility for the elections,” the poll strategist tweeted on Tuesday.

“In my humble opinion, more than me the party needs leadership and collective will to fix the deep-rooted structural problems through transformational reforms,” he added.

Kishor’s reaction came soon after Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala in a tweet confirmed that Kishor had refused to join the party.

It was not the first time that speculations were rife about Kishor joining the party. In 2020, he was in talks with Congress for induction into the party but things did not materialise then. In fact, he had criticised the party leadership last year.

During the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in October 2021, when party general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Priyanka Gandhi was detained on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, Kishor took a jibe at the Congress.

“People looking for a quick, spontaneous revival of GOP led opposition based on Lakhimpur Kheri incident are setting themselves up for a big disappointment. Unfortunately, there are no quick fix solutions to the deep-rooted problems and structural weakness of GOP,” he had tweeted.

In December last year, he once again targeted Congress. “The IDEA and SPACE that Congress represents is vital for a strong opposition. But Congress’ leadership is not the DIVINE RIGHT of an individual especially, when the party has lost more than 90% elections in last 10 years. Let opposition leadership be decided Democratically,” he had tweeted.
