DEHRADUN/CHANDIGARH: A day after the murder of popular Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala, a joint team of Uttarakhand special task force (STF) and Punjab Police nabbed six people in connection with the murder on Monday from Dehradun who were said to be moving in the guise of pilgrims to the shrine.

According to the sources from the state police department, the group includes a man, who is suspected of providing logistical support to the murder accused.

“Total six people were travelling in a four-wheeler from Hemkund Sahib shrine in Chamoli passing through Shimla bypass in Dehradun. We received inputs from the Punjab Police and got to them. The group was moving in the guise of pilgrims to the shrine,” said an official from the Uttarakhand STF told The New Indian.

The police team apprehended the vehicle at Shimla bypass in the Patel Nagar area of the state capital at around noon.

All the six people are being interrogated by the Punjab Police, the source said.

Meanwhile, sources in Delhi Police told The New Indian that Moosewala’s death plot might be linked to Delhi’s high security Tihar Jail as a phone number has been traced to the prison, in connection to the murder.

The source said that a few days ago, a criminal named Shahrukh was arrested by police. He was using a messaging app to communicate with gangster Goldy Brar, based in Canada.

The development comes a day after Moosewala was killed in Punjab’s Mansa district while he was travelling along with his friends in his SUV. He was sprayed with over 30 rounds of bullets resulting in his death. He was declared brought dead at a hospital.

Incidentally, he was killed a day after the Punjab government announced to remove the security cover of 424 people in the state. Two of his four gunmen were withdrawn with the new government order. Mansa SSP Gaurav Toora said that Moosewala had not taken along the remaining two gunmen attached with him at the time of the incident.

Also, he was travelling in a vehicle that was not bulletproof. Normally, he used his bullet-proof Toyota Fortuner for commuting, police said.

Moosewala had joined the Congress in December last year and contested the Punjab assembly elections earlier this year unsuccessfully.

After his death, Punjab Police on Sunday said that the attack on the singer seemed to be due to an inter-gang war since both the names of Moosewala and his manager, Shaganpreet came up in connection with the murder of Vikramjit alias Vicky Middukhera on August 7 last year.

There were allegations that Moosewala had directed his manager Shagunpreet Singh to execute the killing. It was alleged that Shagunpreet hired the members of the Kaushal gang to execute the killing of Middukhera.

Shagunpreet April this year fled to abroad after his name cropped up during the course of the investigation.

According to Delhi Police sources, a team of Special Cell is also questioning gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his aides Kala Jathedi and Kala Rana in connection with Moosewala’s murder since Goldy Brar aka Doctor is a member of the Bishnoi’s gang.

Minutes after the killing of Moosewala in Punjab, the Canada-based Brar took the responsibility for the killing. Brar took to his social media account to claim the responsibility, writing that “he and Lawrence Bishnoi group was behind the murder”.

“Today, Moosewala was killed in Punjab, I, Sachin Bishnoi, Lawrence Bishnoi takes the responsibility. It’s our work. Moosewala’s name surfaced in our brother Vikramjit Singh Middukhera and Gurlal Brar’s murder, but the Punjab Police did not take any action against him. We also came to know that Moosewala was also involved in the encounter of our associate Ankit Bhadu. Moosewala was working against us. Delhi Police had taken his name but Moosewala used his political power and saved his skin each time,” Goldy wrote in his post on Facebook.

Following the broad daylight murder of the Punjabi singer, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday took to Twitter and wrote, “I am Shocked and Deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala. Nobody involved will be spared. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fans across the world. I appeal to everyone to stay calm.”

On Monday, the Chief Minister stepped in to probe into the tragic death of Moosewala and said that the state government shall be requesting the Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice to get the murder case probed by a sitting judge.

Referring to the demand made by Balkor Singh Sidhu, Moosewala’s father, Mann said that the state government shall “ensure full cooperation to this enquiry Commission including that from any of the central agency like NIA”.

Mann also sought a clarification on the statement made by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) VK Bhawra earlier on Sunday that Moosewala’s security was not withdrawn but curtailed.

An inquiry has already been ordered to fix the responsibility of the persons on the aspects of security reduction.
