Moitra Courts Fresh Controversy With ‘Gogoi’ Tweet

KOLKATA: The limelight-hogging All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MP Mahua Moitra has once again found herself in the spotlight. An Assam outfit has filed a complaint against the firebrand leader for her recent tweet suggesting that the phrase “sexual harassment” be replaced by “Mr Gogoi”.

The tweet created a huge uproar in Assam as the surname belongs to the influential Ahom community of the state. A local outfit, Jatiya Sangrami Sena, filed a written complaint at Sivasagar Sadar Police Station against the MP saying that Moitra had insulted the entire Gogoi community. They have demanded an unconditional apology.

“My first of new twitter series on replacements for unparliamentary words. Banned word – Sexual Harassment Replacement – Mr Gogoi,” Moitra had tweeted.

A day later, Moitra retweeted with a clarification thread, “Just for those sanghis twisting tweet to say I targetted all Gogois let me spell it out: Mister Ranjan Gogoi. Honourable MP, Rajya Sabha.

In 2019, Ranjan Gogoi, then chief justice of the country’s apex court, was accused of sexual harassment. The Supreme Court had took suo moto cognisance of the matter. A three-member in-house inquiry committee had found no substance to the allegations and closed the case.
