NEW DELHI: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami made his long-awaited return to international cricket after more than a year, playing in the third T20I against England on January 28. The match, held at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, marked his first appearance for India since the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia.
It was also Shami’s first T20I for India in over two years, as his last T20I match was in November 2022. The announcement of Shami’s return came before the toss when India’s skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, confirmed that Arshdeep Singh would be resting, and Shami would take his place.

The crowd erupted in cheers as they welcomed the veteran pacer back to the fold. Despite the excitement, Shami’s performance was not as expected. He bowled three overs, conceding 25 runs at an economy rate of 8.30, but he was unable to take any wickets.
Although he didn’t pick up wickets, Shami did show glimpses of his usual sharpness. He clocked speeds close to 140 kmph and swung the ball effectively, which reassured fans about his fitness.
This was Shami’s first international game since his injury comeback in domestic cricket, where he had played in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, his domestic performances did not warrant a call-up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India suffered a 26-run defeat in the third T20I, but they still lead the series 2-1. India captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed confidence, saying, “I’m sure Shami will do better going forward.”

Shami’s inclusion in the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy means that he must get some overs under his belt, making the remaining T20Is crucial for his preparation.
