NEW DELHI – In a significant milestone for the Modi government, per capita public spending on healthcare has seen a threefold increase over the past decade. According to the latest data from the National Health Accounts (NHA) Estimates for India, public healthcare expenditure per capita rose to ₹3,169 in 2021-22, up from ₹1,042 in 2013-14. This remarkable growth underscores the government’s commitment to universal healthcare and its efforts to provide greater financial protection for citizens.
For the first time in India’s history, public spending on healthcare has surpassed out-of-pocket expenses by citizens. In the fiscal year 2021-22, government health expenditure accounted for 48% of the total healthcare spending, while out-of-pocket expenses dropped to 39.4%. This marks a significant shift from 2013-14, when out-of-pocket expenditure was a staggering 64.2%, and government spending was only 28.6%.
This shift is a testament to the Modi government’s focus on building a robust healthcare infrastructure and ensuring universal health coverage. The substantial increase in public health expenditure has translated into greater financial protection for citizens, reducing the financial burden of healthcare costs.
