The stolen crown was gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the temple in March 2021. This crown holds significant cultural and religious importance for the local Hindu community, making its theft a matter of great concern.
Sources indicate that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka is in close contact with Bangladeshi authorities to facilitate the recovery of the stolen item. The High Commission issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “We have seen reports of the theft of the crown gifted by PM Modi to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in 2021 during his visit to Bangladesh. We express deep concern and urge the Government of Bangladesh to investigate the theft, recover the crown, and take action against the perpetrators.”

The theft reportedly occurred between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm on Thursday. It took place shortly after the temple priest, Dilip Mukherjee, had completed the day’s worship and left the temple. Upon his return, the cleaning staff discovered that the crown was missing from the deity’s head, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
Local police, led by Inspector Taizul Islam of Shyamnagar Police Station, are actively reviewing CCTV footage to identify the thief. The investigation aims to gather evidence and track down the individuals involved in the theft.
The stolen crown, made of silver and gold-plated materials, is not only a valuable item but also a significant religious artefact. It symbolizes a gesture of goodwill from Prime Minister Modi during his visit to the temple, highlighting the importance of interfaith relations in the region.
