NEW DELHI: In a historic diplomatic gesture, the King of Bhutan bestowed the prestigious Order of Druk Gyalpo upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on Bhutan’s National Day, December 17, 2021, marking a significant milestone in the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The Order of Druk Gyalpo, known as Ngadag Pelgi Khorlo in Bhutanese, represents the highest civilian honor of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Prime Minister Modi becomes the first foreign Head of Government to receive this accolade, joining a distinguished group recognized for their exceptional contributions to Bhutan and its people.

Previous recipients include Her Majesty Queen Kesang Choeden Wangchuck, the Royal Grandmother, and religious figures such as His Holiness Je Thrizur Tenzin Doendrup, the 68th Je Khenpo of Bhutan, and His Holiness Je Tulku Jigme Chhoeda, the 70th Je Khenpo of Bhutan.

In his address, the King of Bhutan expressed profound gratitude for Prime Minister Modi’s exemplary leadership on regional and global platforms. He emphasized the enduring partnership between Bhutan and India, praising Prime Minister Modi’s role in advancing bilateral relations and highlighting his compassionate leadership and visionary governance.

Concluding his speech, the King reaffirmed Bhutan’s deep appreciation for India’s friendship and support, symbolized by the award presented to Prime Minister Modi.
