The 64th International Sugar Organisation-ISO Council Meeting commenced Tuesday, on June 25, under the auspices of Prahlad Joshi, who inaugurated the event. Attended by over 30 delegates from various countries, the meeting focused on discussions surrounding sugar and biofuel production.
NEW DELHI: The 64th International Sugar Organisation-ISO Council Meeting commenced Tuesday, on June 25, under the auspices of Prahlad Joshi, who inaugurated the event. Attended by over 30 delegates from various countries, the meeting focused on discussions surrounding sugar and biofuel production.
Roshan Lal Tamak, Executive Director & CEO of Sugar and Ethanol business at DCM Shriram, underscored the importance of mechanisation and modernisation in sugarcane farming. Highlighting innovations benefiting Indian farmers, Tamak cited solar pumps, drip irrigation, and drone spraying as technologies significantly enhancing agricultural practices. He noted widespread adoption of drones and foliar spray methods in factories to optimize water usage.

Tamak emphasized, “Mechanization is crucial for economic enhancement, ecological preservation, and agricultural efficiency. Laser levelers, for example, save 25% more water compared to traditional methods, while foliar sprays can boost yields by 5%.”
The meeting also showcased advancements in precision farming tools integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and satellite imagery in sugar cultivation. The Indian government’s initiatives, such as PM KUSUM Yojana for solar pump installations, Per Drop More Crop for water conservation, and the NWM Campaign “Catch the Rain” for rainwater harvesting, were highlighted. Additionally, the National Mission on Mechanisation and the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) focus on promoting mechanised farming.
Discussing DCM Shriram’s efforts, Tamak mentioned the establishment of a dedicated call centre to support farmers with queries and timely information on sugarcane cultivation.
Recognizing India’s pivotal role as the world’s largest consumer and second largest producer of sugar, the ISO Council nominated India to chair the organisation for 2024. As part of the proceedings, international delegates will embark on an industrial tour, starting with a visit to a grain-based distillery in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh on June 24, 2024. This tour aims to showcase India’s adoption of cutting-edge technologies in biofuel production and related by-products.
The 64th ISO Council Meeting continues to serve as a platform for global collaboration and innovation, solidifying India’s leadership in shaping a sustainable future for the sugar and biofuel industries.
