NEW DELHI: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is a political coalition contesting against the incumbent MNF (Mizo National Front) in the 2023 Mizoram elections.
The counting of votes in Mizoram is presently in progress, and in the initial trends, the ZPM has surpassed the halfway point, leading in 18 seats and securing victory in 8, as reported by the Election Commission (EC).
Should the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) successfully translate the current trends into concrete results by the conclusion of the vote-counting process, it would represent a significant blow to the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF). Despite being in a favourable position in this election, the ZPM secured only six seats out of the total 40 in the 2018 Mizoram election.
The 2023 Mizoram election holds great importance for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), as the political alliance strives to assume power this term, establishing an early lead in as many as 27 out of the total 40 seats.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga is currently lagging in his constituency, Aizawl East 1, as his ZPM counterpart is surging ahead in the initial trends.

Established in 2017, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is the newest political entity in Mizoram. It gained official party registration in 2019, following its success in securing six out of 40 seats during the 2018 Mizoram elections.
ZPM is an alliance of six parties in Mizoram – Mizoram People’s Conference, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Decentralisation Front, Zoram Reformation Front and Mizoram People’s Party. These parties have now merged into a single party.
Founded by MLA and former MP Lalduhoma, who is also the chief ministerial candidate for ZPM in the elections, the party has its roots in his political leadership. Lalduhoma, previously associated with the Congress, also served in the security service of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

ZPM adheres to the concept of promoting secularism and safeguarding the interests of regional minorities in Mizoram. The party has additionally levelled numerous accusations of corruption against the incumbent Chief Minister Zoramthanga.
If granted power in Mizoram, one of the principal objectives of ZPM leaders will be to reintroduce a ban on liquor in the state.
