Mithun Chakraborty named 54th recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award

NEW DELHI: Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty, 74, will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema. The award will be presented during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8 recognising Mithun’s lifetime contribution to Indian cinema, spanning nearly five decades and over 350 films across multiple languages.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the news on Monday, September 30, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Chakraborty as a “cultural icon” for his exceptional body of work.

“Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” Prime Minister Modi said in a post on X, endorsing the announcement made by the Union Minister.

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema (SIC),” Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier said on X.

Mithun Chakraborty will be the 54th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which was instituted in 1969 in honour of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. Previous recipients include renowned figures like Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, and Yash Chopra.

Fans of the beloved star flooded social media with congratulatory messages, with some expressing that the award was long overdue. Mithun Chakraborty expressed his immense gratitude and dedicated the award to his family and fans.

Mithun Chakraborty debuted in the National Award-winning film Mrigayaa(1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, for which he earned his first National Film Award for Best Actor. Over the years, he rose to stardom with hits like Disco Dancer, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, and Commando, earning him the nickname “Disco Dancer” for his electrifying dance moves.

Throughout his career, Mithun has won three National Flim Awards and a Filmfare Award showcasing his versatility in various genres. Earlier this year, Mithun Chakraborty was also awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the arts.
