NEW DELHI: Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal has hailed the role of non-officio directors (NoDs) in improving the performance of central public sector undertakings (CPSUs), saying that they play an important link between the government and the public.

Interacting with NoDs under the ministries of commerce & industry, consumer affairs & food & public distribution, and textiles, Goyal said the expertise of non-officio directors will help the government in ensuring the welfare of India.

“NoDs have assumed critical importance given increased sectoral complexities. NoDs are expected to bring an alternate perspective, provide an impartial view of shortcomings and suggest measures for improvement,” he said.

He further said that these directors serve as role models for employees and also safeguard the interests of all stakeholders. Goyal extorted them to take any misgovernance to the management but cautioned against attempts to influence the decisions of central public sector enterprises.

Commerce secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said that NoDs should keep themselves well informed about the company and the environment in which it operates.

Sudhanshu Pandey, secretary of the department of food and public distribution gave an overview of the department. He said that the department runs one of the world’s biggest food distribution programs through National Food Security Act(NFSA) and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
