NEW DELHI: Reports indicate that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is moving forward with plans to launch a Twitter rival. The motivation behind this move is to provide public figures with a platform that is well-managed and trustworthy. Celebrities such as the Dalai Lama and Oprah Winfrey are reportedly on the list of target users for this new platform.
The upcoming app, currently codenamed Project92, may be called Threads when it is released to the public. According to a report from a tech news website, Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, mentioned during an internal meeting that this app is their response to Twitter, but “sanely run”.

Cox mentioned that they have been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in a platform that is run in a sensible manner, one they can trust and rely on for content distribution. This reference seems to be directed towards concerns over Twitter’s management under Elon Musk.
The report further revealed that Meta is in discussions with Oprah Winfrey, who has over 42 million followers on Twitter, and the Dalai Lama, who has nearly 19 million followers, as potential users. Coding for the app started in January, and Meta intends to make it available soon.

Previous reports suggest that the app will be based on Instagram, enabling users to sign in with their Instagram credentials. Their followers, user bios, and verification would transfer over to the new app.
Under Elon Musk’s leadership, Twitter has faced various challenges. However, Musk claims that the platform’s user base has remained stable since his acquisition of the company in October. He even mentioned that daily active users reached a record high of over 250 million.
