NEW DELHI: The Muslim man who led the group of 41 trapped workers inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi spoke to Prime Minister Modi about the spirit of brotherhood and unity among them, transcending regional differences.

On Tuesday, PM Modi spoke to all of the trapped workers through a telephonic conversation where he expressed his relief after they were successfully rescued on the 18th day of being entrapped. He said, “Had something untoward happened, I can’t describe how we could have taken that. You all have shown exemplary bravery.”

Shabab Mohammed, a Muslim worker employed by Navyuga, the Engineering Company, played a crucial role in promoting a healthy lifestyle among his fellow trapped members inside the tunnel. He organised evening walks and morning yoga sessions, motivating everyone to prioritise fitness to avoid health issues during their confinement in the Silkyara tunnel. Additionally, he emphasised the importance of communal meals, highlighting that they all shared their daily meals together.

Shabab said, “There wasn’t a single day when we were afraid of the fact that something wrong will happen to us. The reason being that we were 41 members and even though all of us belong to different states, we stayed united like brothers. If someone faced some problem, we stayed together and hence we had no issue throughout the 18 days of entrapment.”

Astonished by this fact, the PM said, “You had each other’s back throughout the situation. At times like this, it is not rare to get into a little ‘tu tu-main main’ (disagreement). This happens even in a railway compartment. But you all have remained united.”

The labourer also mentioned that they exchanged meals and gathered to eat together in one location. The workers also conveyed their appreciation for the initiatives of the Uttarakhand government under the leadership of Pushkar Singh Dhami, which led to their safe rescue from the confined tunnel.

Speaking about practicing yoga, the PM added, “I heard that one of you knew Yoga and you all used to do it together inside the tunnel.” Shabab replied, “Yes sir, it was me who taught them and encouraged them for Yoga. Since there was nothing to do inside except eating, I asked them to practise Yoga early in the morning so we stay fit during the time in the tunnel.”
