MCD fires junior engineer, suspends assistant engineer after IAS aspirants’ deaths

NEW DELHI: In response to the tragic deaths of three civil service aspirants due to flooding at a coaching institute, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken decisive action.

On Monday, the MCD terminated the services of a junior engineer and suspended an assistant engineer. This move comes after the incident at Rao’s IAS Study Circle on Saturday night, where the basement was inundated, leading to the students’ deaths.

The MCD also announced the initiation of an encroachment removal drive in the area, known for its dense concentration of coaching centres. The coaching institute was found to violate building bylaws, as the basement, which was permitted for parking and storage, was improperly used as a library and reading hall.

MCD Karol Bagh Zone Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Kumar Mishra confirmed the disciplinary actions, stating that Junior Engineer Vinay Mittal was terminated and Assistant Engineer Vishram Meena was suspended. This decision was part of a broader crackdown on violations in the area.

Officials revealed that the encroachment by coaching centres and other buildings had covered storm drains with platforms and ramps, severely obstructing water drainage and making it difficult to clean the drains. In response, two bulldozers have been deployed to excavate these blocked drains.

On Sunday, the MCD had already sealed 13 basement sections of illegally operated coaching centres in the Karol Bagh zone. Videos from the incident site showed severe flooding outside Rao’s IAS Study Circle, which led to the basement’s inundation after damage to the gate.
