NEW DELHI: Mapmygenome, the firm that gained prominence during first Coronavirus wave for becoming first in country to provide airport testing by tying up Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad for Covid 19, has now expanded its presence to Delhi.

The company’s Delhi lab has been certified by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

It is well equipped with state-of-art technology to provide services like COVID-19 RT-PCR and antibody tests, blood tests, imaging, genomic tests and genetic counselling, the company has said.

Anu Acharya, founder & CEO of Mapmygenome told The New Indian, “A new laboratory in Delhi-NCR is a key strategic move for us. With our products and services aimed at prevention and early detection, we hope to make a positive impact and enable healthier lives.”

Acharya said her team already is also closely working with several hospitals in Delhi.

“There is a lot of significant scope of expansion as it is the national capital. We are also hoping to get into some of the other cities and Bangalore would be the next. We all know that our healthcare system is more inclined towards the curative & not so much towards preventive, that’s why I thought if we could tackle the problem earlier it would reduce the cost for patients & the state governments. With that thought we started Mapmygenome 7 years ago. Glad that we are able to expand our footprint now. Even though, we currently do the tests across India but its always better to be physically present in Delhi.”

Acharya also mentioned that the COVID pandemic played a major role helping the company come into the limelight. “It was a call for action for every biotech company in the country during the COVID wave. We played multiple roles, our ‘Genomepatri’ helped people understand the disease from a genomic point of view. We did a lot of RT-PCR testing from our laboratories in Hyderabad and then from Hyderabad airport as well. I got involved with other states to study and research. I think COVID justified the reason for our existence in many ways.”

“The Omicron variant is clearly very transmissible and we are working with other institutes and the samples that are coming in from the airports and communities to understand the susceptibility and what is going on with the spread of the virus,” said Acharya.

Parliamentarians and industry experts including former department of biotechnology secretary Dr Renu Swarup, Nasscom chief Debjani Ghosh and MP Shashi Tharoor were present at the Delhi launch.

“I have been in contact since the very establishment of Mapmygenome. We all know that genomics has applications in multiple areas, we’ve even seen during the COVID pandemic. The sequencing of the viral genome played a vital role in tackling this dread disease. Different people have different levels of susceptibility to the COVID, this is where the understanding of the human genome is essential and I am pleased that Mapmygenome is a trailblazer in this area,” said Tharoor.

The Hyderabad based firm has 250-plus members consisting of clinicians, genetic counselors, lab scientists, statisticians, bioinformaticians and technocrats with with more tha 20 years of experience in genomic research and Bio-IT support services in global markets.
