NEW DELHI: Taking heed to the calls of his supporters, Manipur Chief minister N Biren Singh said that he is not resigning from his post.

Rumour mills have been abuzz in violence-hit Manipur since morning with the news that CM Biren Singh will tender his resignation, taking accountability for the situation in the state.

“At this crucial juncture, I would like to clarify that I will not be resigning from the post of chief minister,” Singh tweeted after scores of his supporters tore the resignation letter.

As the news of CM Biren Singh’s possible resignation came out, hordes of his supporters came on the roads in Imphal. As the Manipur CM proceeded towards Raj Bhawan to tender his resignation to the Governor, his supporters blocked the convoy. They also tore up his resignation letter. There are also reports of protests against CM Biren Singh’s decision to resign.

Since May, more than 100 people have lost their lives amid ethnic clashes in the state. Despite efforts, the state government had failed to quell the clashes, leading to questions being asked about CM Biren Singh’s capability in controlling the law and order situation in the state.

On Thursday, three more lives were lost following an exchange of fire between security forces and suspected rioters in the Kangpokpi district of the state. Many believe that the incident forced CM Biren Singh to write his resignation letter.

The northeastern state continues to grapple with a devastating wave of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Meiteis, comprising 53 per cent of Manipur’s population, primarily reside in the Imphal Valley, while Nagas and Kukis, accounting for 40 per cent, inhabit the hill districts.

Meanwhile, in a bid to assess the situation on the ground, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi undertook a two-day visit to Manipur, despite initially facing denial of permission from the government.

Gandhi expressed his deep concern for the affected communities, stating, “It’s heartbreaking to see and listen to the plight of those who have lost loved ones and homes due to the violence in Manipur.”

Gandhi emphasised the urgent need for peace and unity, acknowledging the cries for help from every person he met during his visit. He stressed that securing the lives and livelihoods of the people in Manipur should be the top priority, urging collective efforts towards achieving that goal.
