Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra confirms that concerned EU parliamentarians have been informed that the situation in Manipur is an internal matter for India
NEW DELHI: India has clarified to European parliamentarians that the situation in Manipur is an internal matter ahead of a planned debate on the issue in the European parliament.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed that concerned EU parliamentarians have been contacted to emphasise that the matter is solely internal to India. “This is a matter totally internal to India,” Kwatra said.
Kwatra stated that the Indian government is aware of the developments at the EU parliament in Brussels and that efforts have been made to reach out to the involved parliamentarians, reiterating that the situation is an internal matter.
“We reached out to the concerned EU parliamentarians. But we made it very clear that this is a matter absolutely internal to India,” he said.
“We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called Urgency Resolution. Such interference in India’s internal affairs is unacceptable, and reflects a colonial mindset,” said the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
“Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilise its time more productively on its internal issues,” he added.
The ongoing clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur have resulted in violent incidents for nearly two months. Opposition parties have accused the government of failing to effectively control the violence.
In a unified effort, 31 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Manipur have resolved to appeal to Union Home minister Amit Shah for a conclusive resolution that would restore peace in the state.
The MLAs suggested replacing the 9th Assam Rifles, the 22nd Assam Rifles, and the 37th Assam Rifles with other central security forces that prioritise promoting state unity. They also urged HM Shah to take stronger actions against armed insurgent groups, including cross-border insurgent groups, to restore peace and normalcy.
In a separate development, the Indigenous Tribal Leader Forum (ITLF) issued an official statement expressing apologies to the Kuki Zo people for misguided actions and conflicts with the Meitei people in Manipur.
The ITLF committed to the welfare and unity of indigenous communities, acknowledged and deeply regretted the unintended consequences of their actions that impacted both the Kuki Zo and Meitei communities. The organisation reaffirmed its dedication to fostering harmony, mutual respect, peace, and coexistence among different indigenous communities.
