Man with intellectual disability beaten to death in Delhi, 7 arrested

NEW DELHI: Seven people, including a 17-year-old juvenile, have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old man with an intellectual disability in northeast Delhi’s Nand Nagari area.

The victim, Israr, was tied to a pole and beaten by a group of people on suspicion of theft on September 26. He succumbed to his injuries at his home later that evening.

The accused have been identified as DJ owner Kamal (23), tailor shop owner Manoj (19), Kamal’s employee Yunus (20), laborer Kishan (19), factory worker Lucky (19), and eatery vendor Lucky (19). All of them live in the same locality as Israr.

According to the police, the accused told them that they caught Israr lurking around the area at around 5 am and thought he was a thief. They began asking him questions, but he was unable to reply properly due to his intellectual disability. The accused then tied him to an electric pole and beat him.

A video of the incident also surfaced, showing Israr begging the mob to leave him while tied to the pole. The mob can be seen attacking him with rods and sticks.

Israr’s father, Abdul Wajid, a fruit vendor, found his son lying outside their house at around 6:30 pm on September 26. Israr was badly injured and in pain. Wajid has four daughters and one son, Israr.

He told his father that some boys had caught him near G4 Block, Sunder Nagri on September 26 and thought he was a thief. They had tied him to a pole and beaten him with sticks for some time. He identified his assailants as some boys who live near G4 Block and E57 Block, Sundar Nagri.

Israr’s neighbor, Aamir, brought him home on a rickshaw at around 3 pm. Israr succumbed to his injuries at his home at around 7 pm. Abdul Wajid called the police at 10:46 pm that night.

A post-mortem examination conducted at GTB Hospital the next day found blunt force injuries all over Israr’s body, including his back, arms, and legs. The cause of death was shock and haemorrhage.

The police have registered a case of murder against the accused and are investigating the matter further.
